Why Succession is Peak

There are comfort shows, shows you watch to unwind after a long day, and then there are shows that hold up a mirror to the world and are varying aspects, however good and however bad. Succession is firmly in this latter category.

This love did not come from the first episode; however, as a huge fan of the show, I'll be the first to admit that it does not capture people from the first episode. This is due to its unique way of storytelling; there is no direct protagonist, no martyr of good that the viewer can attach themselves to. There is only this unflinching insight into this dynasty, that is, the Roy family, and I love it. Trust me, by the end of the first season, you'll be completely and utterly entranced. And by the end of the 4th season, you'll have wondered where the time went.

It is rare to find such a show that is so deeply layered in characters, dialogue and events that all too often feel painfully poignant to reality. Any character, whether that's a doorman or office secretary, with one line each, all the way up to the main triage of characters feel fully realised humans, not just figments on the script sheet. It dares you to pick a side and sympathise with someone in a desperate attempt to understand them before ripping the floor out from beneath them. And that is another brilliant aspect, as there is no main character, there is no plot armour for anyone to hide behind, every character is on the chopping block, keeping you on your toes the entire time.
